I was very pleased to attend the Viktor &Rolf Fashion Artists 25 Years retrospective at the Kunsthal in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. It was a magnificent display of Amsterdam’s finest design duo; full of character, wit, artistic endeavour and youthful playfulness. For the past 25 years the collaboration between Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren has led to works of uncompromising beauty and unconventional design. Throughout their career, Viktor&Rolf have carved a contradictory identity that pushes the boundaries between art and fashion, often contrasting romance and rebellion, exuberance and control, classicism and conceptualism.
Radical Conception of ‘wearable art’
Viktor&Roolf: Fashion Artists 25 Years shows Viktor&Rolf’s radical conception of ‘wearable art’ and explores the elements that make their designs unique in the contemporary fashion world. Around sixty works from the Viktor&Rolf’s haute couture and ready-to-wear collections give an insight into their conceptual approach, also showing that they have never shied away from criticising the fashion industry of which theyare a part themselves. With regard to form and materials- the interplay of lines, volumes, bows, collars and ruffles – their creations are stunningly beautiful and technically perfect.
“With exquisite craftsmanship and dreamy silhouettes, sometimes made from tinkling bells or red carpet, the fashion artists Viktor & Rolf―a real Dutch national treasure―have been creating wearable art for the past 25 years in the most unique and singular style.”–Thierry-Maxime Loriot, curator of the exhibition Viktor & Rolf: Fashion Artists 25 Years

From designing and then coming to the stage, how these conceptions of a mind come to life is amazing. It is like from pen to paper how a thought comes alive through the conception of an author. I loved the kid’s workshop, love to include the children where and whenever we can. Rotterdam has a special place within my heart, as I have dedicated my seventh book to this sacred country. I loved visiting Rotterdam last year and have wonderful memories I have brought back home with me. Loved your article.
Blessings from Seattle.
Thanks so much Ann Marie! It was a fantastic event to attend and Viktor&Rolf are indeed so talented. Rotterdam is a beautiful city. What is the name of your book that you have dedicated it to so I can look it up?
Trace :o)
Hi Trace!
I am glad you enjoyed the event! Sounds really fantastic. The name of my book is “Spiritual Lighthouse: The Dream Diaries Of Ann Marie Ruby.” I have a dedication chapter within which I have written all about this sacred country which is what attracted me to your post about this event in Rotterdam!
Blessings,
Ann Marie Ruby
I just looked on Amazon–wow–congratulations Ann Marie! Looks intriguing! You are so talented!

Amazing works of art, I am by no means a fashionista! So quite a few of these I cannot even imagine wearing or how you would wear them. I give the artist credit for using their imagination! It looks like it would have been a fun event!
Thanks so much Tammy! It was a fun event. Viktor&Rolf definitely have the fun factor in their creations!

Thanks so much–it was a fab event and I had fun documenting it!

Wow, this exhibition looks amazing! I’ve always been interested in catwalks, especially the more extreme side of things, when you’d look at something and wonder how anyone could ever wear that in real life. The truth is that not all fashion is meant for everyday use, and, like other art mediums, is meant to be more of an expression. I LOVE the chainsaw dress! Your photo coverage of the event looks amazing, and totally brings the exhibition to life, too!
Thanks so much Rebekah! The chainsaw dress was my fave too! I like to think they would tone down the clothes by the time they hit the shops. It was a fun event and I enjoyed documenting it!
